Use this free fence calculator to plan a home-improvement or DIY project from the measurements and product information you already have.
HomeCalc shows the formula behind the result and keeps product-dependent assumptions editable where possible, so the calculator can match the material, package or supplier you actually plan to use.
Enter total fence length, gate width, post spacing and panel width to estimate basic material counts.
FREE FENCE ESTIMATOR
Fence Calculator: Posts, Panels & Sections Needed
Estimate posts and panels for a straight fence run using spacing, panel width and gate openings.
Fence posts
Approx. 12 panels over 96 ft of fence
This is a straight-run planning estimate. Corners, end posts, gate posts, terrain and local installation requirements can change post count.
Count fence sections first, then posts
A straight fence run is divided into sections between posts. HomeCalc subtracts gate/opening width from the usable fence length, estimates sections from post spacing and calculates the corresponding post and panel counts.
usable fence length ÷ spacing = sections; sections + 1 = posts
What to check before using the result
- Measure each straight run separately when the fence turns corners.
- Match post spacing and panel width to the fence system you intend to buy.
- Gates and corners can require dedicated or heavier posts beyond a simple straight-run estimate.
- Check property lines, utilities, setbacks, permits and local footing requirements before digging.
A line divided into sections needs a post at both ends. That is why a straight run with 12 sections needs 13 posts before special gate, corner or terminal requirements are considered.
