The end post is the easy one to forget
A line divided into sections needs a post at both ends. That is why a straight run with 12 sections needs 13 posts before special gate, corner or terminal requirements are considered.

Why are there more posts than sections?
Because each run needs a post at the start and another at the end. For a simple straight line, posts are generally sections plus one.
Should gate width be removed from the fence run?
Yes for panel coverage, because the gate occupies part of the total line. Gate hardware and special gate posts should still be planned separately.
Can I use this for a fence with corners?
Calculate straight runs separately and account for the corner-post requirements of your chosen system.
