Use this free topsoil calculator to plan a home-improvement or DIY project from the measurements and product information you already have.
HomeCalc shows the formula behind the result and keeps product-dependent assumptions editable where possible, so the calculation can match the material, package or supplier you actually plan to use.
Topsoil requirements depend on both surface area and added depth. HomeCalc converts the measured area into a volume so you can compare bulk cubic-yard delivery with bagged soil.

Work out topsoil from the depth you plan to add
Topsoil requirements depend on both surface area and added depth. HomeCalc converts the measured area into a volume so you can compare bulk cubic-yard delivery with bagged soil.
length × width × (depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27 = cubic yards
What to check before using the result
- Use added soil depth, not total root-zone depth when you are topping up existing ground.
- Separate raised beds, lawn repairs and grading areas if they need different depths.
- Bulk soil can settle after spreading, so supplier guidance may matter for finished grade.
- Bag sizes vary widely; use the cubic-foot volume printed on the bag.
Thin topdressing depths can look small on paper, but the volume accumulates across hundreds or thousands of square feet. Measure the whole treatment area before deciding between bags and bulk delivery.
