Roofing shingles are commonly planned in roofing squares, where one square represents 100 sq ft of roof area. HomeCalc converts the measured roof area into squares, adds the selected allowance and multiplies by the bundles per square for the chosen product.

What to check before using the result
- Start with actual roof surface area, not only the house footprint.
- Use the bundles-per-square figure from the shingle wrapper or manufacturer.
- Valleys, hips, rakes and complex cut-up roofs can require more waste than simple gables.
- Starter strips and ridge or hip caps may be separate products and are not automatically the same as field shingles.
Bundle coverage depends on the shingle product. Treat any default as a planning value and replace it with the packaging information before ordering. This is especially important for designer or specialty shingles.
