Use this free ceiling paint calculator to plan a home-improvement or DIY project from the measurements and product information you already have.
HomeCalc shows the formula behind the result and keeps product-dependent assumptions editable where possible, so the calculator can match the material, package or supplier you actually plan to use.
Ceiling area is length × width. Multiply by coats and allowance, then divide by your paint’s stated coverage.

Calculate ceiling paint separately from wall paint
A flat rectangular ceiling has the same area as the room footprint. HomeCalc multiplies that area by the number of coats, applies the selected allowance and divides by the coverage of the ceiling paint.
ceiling area × coats × allowance ÷ coverage = paint needed
What to check before using the result
- Use the coverage printed on the ceiling-paint product.
- Texture and porous repairs can reduce effective coverage.
- Multiple coats multiply the total coated area.
- Vaulted, tray or beamed ceilings need more detailed surface measurements than a flat footprint.
Ceiling products, sheen and surface texture can differ from wall paint. Calculating the ceiling separately lets you use its own coat count and coverage instead of assuming both surfaces behave the same.
