Primer quantity depends on the wall surface that remains after openings, the number of primer coats and the coverage of the chosen product. HomeCalc uses those values rather than treating primer as a fixed fraction of paint.

What to check before using the result
- Use the coverage stated for the exact primer and substrate.
- Fresh drywall, masonry, stains and other porous or problem surfaces can behave differently.
- Subtract major openings that will not receive primer.
- Do not assume the same coat count or coverage as the finish paint.
The purpose of primer is often to seal or bond to a surface, so absorption and surface condition can matter more than with a finish coat. Manufacturer guidance should take priority over a generic coverage assumption.
