Use this free roof area calculator to plan a home-improvement or DIY project from the measurements and product information you already have.
HomeCalc shows the formula behind the result and keeps product-dependent assumptions editable where possible, so the calculator can match the material, package or supplier you actually plan to use.
Enter building length, width and roof rise per 12 inches of run. HomeCalc applies the pitch factor to the footprint area.
SIMPLE GABLE ROOF ESTIMATOR
Roof Area Calculator: Square Feet from Pitch
Estimate total roof surface area for a simple gable roof from footprint dimensions and pitch.
Estimated result
Convert a building footprint into sloped roof area
The footprint under a sloped roof is smaller than the roof surface itself. HomeCalc starts with building length × width, then applies the pitch factor for a simple gable roof to estimate the actual roof-plane area.
footprint area × √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²) = roof area
What to check before using the result
- Use the building dimensions covered by the roof, including relevant overhang only if your measurements include it.
- Enter roof pitch accurately; steeper roofs have a larger surface than the same flat footprint.
- Dormers, valleys, hips and multiple roof sections are not represented by one simple gable calculation.
- Measure complex roofs by plane or use professional takeoff information when accuracy is critical.
A flat projection does not account for slope. As pitch increases, each roof plane becomes longer from eave to ridge, so material area increases even though the building footprint stays the same.
