Use this free mulch calculator to plan a home-improvement or DIY project from the measurements and product information you already have.
HomeCalc shows the formula behind the result and keeps product-dependent assumptions editable where possible, so the calculation can match the material, package or supplier you actually plan to use.
Mulch is a volume calculation, not just an area calculation. Measure the bed, choose the finished mulch depth and HomeCalc converts that volume to cubic feet and cubic yards, with bag estimates where applicable.

Estimate mulch by area and depth
Mulch is a volume calculation, not just an area calculation. Measure the bed, choose the finished mulch depth and HomeCalc converts that volume to cubic feet and cubic yards, with bag estimates where applicable.
length × width × (depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27 = cubic yards
What to check before using the result
- Measure each bed separately when the landscape has irregular sections, then add the totals.
- Use the finished depth you actually want after spreading rather than the loose pile height.
- Existing mulch may reduce how much new material is needed if it is being topped up rather than replaced.
- Bag volume varies by product and retailer, so use the package size shown on the bag.
Doubling mulch depth doubles the required volume for the same bed area. That is why a 2-inch refresh and a 4-inch new installation can produce very different yardage even when the length and width are identical.
